On June 22, 2024, Mrs. Gladys Mastin peacefully passed away at North Alabama Medical Center, surrounded by her loved ones. Mrs. Gladys Mastin was born on May 21, 1945, in Sheffield, AL, and was the daughter of the late Oliver Hampton and Naomi Watts Hampton. She grew up in Muscle Shoals, AL. She was a proud 1963 graduate of Leighton Training School, where she was a member of the student council and chorus. After graduation, she attended Cosmetology School in Birmingham, AL.
At an early age, Mrs. Mastin accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at Mt. Olivia Baptist Church. She later joined Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Missionary Society, as an assistant Church Clerk, and sang in the Mass Choir.
On June 25, 1965, she married the love of her life, Bennie James Mastin. Their love and companionship endured for 58 years, creating a strong bond and blessing them with four beautiful sons.
Mrs. Mastin was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bennie James Mastin; her father, Oliver Hampton, and mother, Naomi Watts Hampton; her brothers, Edward Hampton, Odell Hampton, Walter Hampton, and Thomas Hampton (Carnell); her sister, Carolyn Alford (John); her brother-in-law, Paul Moss; and her sons, Michael W. Mastin and Bernard L. Mastin.
Throughout her life, she worked as a seamstress at GC and TJs until 1992, after which she dedicated her time to being a homemaker and a doting grandmother.
Mrs. Mastin is survived by her loving sons, Warrick Sr. (Jacinta) and Christopher (Bridget). She was “Granny” to nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Juanita Moss; sisters-in-law, Alma Hampton, Mildred Hampton, Virginia Hampton, Cleazell Mastin Roberson, and Judy Mastin Thompson; brothers-in-law, Steven Mastin, Lenden Mastin, and Eddie Mastin; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
