John T. Hampton, servant of God, family man, community leader, and the hardest working man we’ve known, has completed his time here after 101 years. John Thomas Hampton has been called home. Through segregation, two world wars, two pandemics, and the Great Depression, John T. raised a family, lifted a community, and taught generation after generation how to live, love, and grow. A man of few words who spoke volumes through his actions and whose actions changed lives, changed communities, and changed the country. Married to the absolute love of his life, Sabina Hampton, for 86 years, proved that love is always the answer by living life in such a way that love was never in question. Whether John T. was hauling ice or hauling mail, working at the cafe or the funeral home, building houses, selling peanuts, or working in the field, you can guarantee he had family and/or young minds he treated like family, near, instilling them with the skills, talents, and work ethic that he modeled constantly, consistently, and without compromise. Whether it was to correct, to inform, or to express love and appreciation, when John T. spoke, his voice, barely above a whisper, resounded. His words carefully chosen, his intent wholly communicated, John T. rarely repeated himself. He meant what he said. He said what he meant. A man of action, honor, and integrity. John T. Hampton did not live to amass a list of accomplishments or to be honored by a string of awards. He did not base his actions on recognition or his time and effort for personal accolades. He did what was right because it was right. “Lives of great men remind us, we can make our lives sublime and departing leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time.” He leaves to cherish his memory: four children, Ronnie (Tressia), Edwin (Harriet, passed), Bernardean, and James (Lois); eight grandchildren, John Willie, Jr., (Kelly), Ronnie, Jr., (Tamika), Zaneta (Quintin), Edwin, Jr., (Angela), Amber (Jerrod), Alvertis “AJ” (Emily), Aaron, and John, Jr.; 20 great-grandchildren, Deshawn (Jerrica), John Willie III, John T., Bryce, Anjeliese, Braydon, Peyton, Braylen, Jaxon, Khobi, Khylie, Aaron, Jr., “Ace”, Tameron, Mikah, Aaliyah, Tamia, Chase, Eric, Nathaniel, and Elizabeth; one great-great-grandchild, Noah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in passing by his wife, Mrs. Sabina Annie Edward Appleton Hampton, and his son, John Willie (Patsy)
