Jessie Lee Yates, a spirited soul known for his handy skills and infectious humor, passed away surrounded by his loving family in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, on April 8, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born September 1, 1961, in Lawrence County, Alabama, to the late Mr. Eddie Albert Yates and Mrs. Evia Yates, Jessie spent his entire life in the state he loved so dearly, imprinting his legacy on the hearts of all who knew him. A proud graduate of Hazelwood High School, Jessie's education laid the foundation for his lifelong career as a handyman. He was a true jack of all trades, with an admirable work ethic that was evident to everyone who benefited from his broad range of skills. Jessie's hands were rarely still, as he was always found fixing, building, or improving something for someone in need.
Beyond his professional life, Jessie was a man of simple pleasures. He had an enduring love for shooting pool, a pastime that saw him become a fixture at local pool halls where he was both a fierce competitor and a cherished friend. His other passion, cutting grass, was more than just a chore; it was a meditative practice for Jessie, one that brought him peace and satisfaction. Jessie's spirited nature was complemented by his quick wit and sense of humor. He had the rare ability to light up a room with his laughter and to turn any situation into a moment of joy. Those who knew Jessie will remember him not only for the work he did with his hands but also for the laughter and smiles he so freely gave.
Jessie was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Evia Yates; sisters, Hattie Jackson and Norma Yates; and brothers, James Yates, Earnest Turner, and Kenneth Yates.
Family was the cornerstone of Jessie's life. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Eugenia Simmons, who was his partner in every sense and his greatest support throughout their years together. Jessie was a devoted father to his sons, Brandon, Christopher, and Cameron Yates (Ashton) teaching them the value of hard work the importance of family, and how to find humor in everyday life. His sisters, Sally Yates and Rosa Goodloe (married to Pernell), and brothers, Carl Yates and Peter Albert Yates, will miss their brother's larger-than-life presence and boundless energy. Jessie's light will shine on through his granddaughter, Ellie Katherine Yates, his first and only grandchild whom he adored dearly. As we reflect on Jessie's life, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Jessie's memory will forever be etched into the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Jessie's life was one well-lived, filled with laughter, love, and the kind of practical wisdom that can't be found in books. He was the embodiment of a life full of purpose and joy, and his legacy will continue to inspire those he has left behind.
