Dora Jean King Vinson was born on June 14, 1944, to the late Emma Jean Ray and the late Willie F. King.
On July 14, 2023, at the age of 79, she was transformed from her temporal to her eternal home to be with the Lord. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. New Home MB Church. She later united with the Galilee MB Church in Leighton, where she served faithfully until her health started declining. She was an active member of the choir for many years. She loved to sing Zion songs. One of her favorite songs was “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” How thankful we are that when she got tired and weak that she reached out and took the hand of our Precious Lord, and he led his child on home.
Dora was a graduate of the Leighton Training School, Class of 1962. She was a majorette in the high school marching band, and she was known as a “high stepper.” She was also an active member of the LTS choir.
Dora was employed by National Linen Service as a supervisor for many years and retired in 2004.
After retirement she became a volunteer at North Alabama Medical Center in the Same Day Services Surgical Department where her daughter also worked. She was loved by all of the nurses and volunteers. She loved to cook for her family. She was an excellent cook, spending many hours in the kitchen preparing those meals with “love.” She always made sure that you would feel welcomed in her home. Everyone knew that you would find a lot of love, laughter, and food in her home.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Ausber Vinson, and two daughters, Bridget Donley and Cassandra Ricks.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her loving daughter and son, Rochelle Vinson of Muscle Shoals, AL, and Andrey (Donna) Vinson of Tuscumbia, AL; four sisters, Martha (Gordon) of Sterling, IL, Elizabeth (the late Dr. Gusta Booker) Booker of Pearland, TX, and Candy (Leroy) Perry and Jackie (Charles) Jolley, both from Birmingham, AL; one brother, Richard Ray (Ussery) of Killen, AL; seven grandchildren, Demetrius Ricks, David (Daija) Ricks, Jr., Alexandria Vinson, Kelyn Vinson, Christopher Harris, NaKieya Vinson, and Jamillia Pollard; nine great-grandchildren, Elijah Campbell, Danaisa, Danelle, Daviah, DaMera, DaMoni Ricks, Kimora, Markayla Singletary, and TeAndrey Whilby; two sons-in- law, James Donley of Tuscumbia, AL, and David Ricks, Sr., of Muscle Shoals, AL; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Freeman of Florence, AL, Cleopatra (Berkeley) Brooks of Hillsboro, AL; one brother-in-law, Timothy Vinson of Sheffield, AL; special family connected by love – the children of the late Bennie Woods, Lolitha (Henry) Simmons, John (LaTonya) Woods, Reverend Dwight (Latresha) Woods, Patrick (Karin) Woods, Tina Woods, Bennie Woods, Jr.; a very special caregiver and friend, Mildred Perkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
