Mrs. Deborah Sledge Burns was born on March 22, 1961 to the late Percy Sledge and Carrie Toney in Sheffield, Alabama. She spent the early years of her life in Leighton Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Sheffield High School, where she was recognized as Miss Bronze, and a basketball and track athlete. Deborah was ever calm and exuded a serene presence. She was full of love and compassion. She valued helping others and creating a joyous atmosphere for everyone—family, friends, and her patients at ECM Hospital, where she worked as a devoted Registered Respiratory Therapist. Her greatest passion was singing and she found joy singing to anyone who asked. Her voice was unmatched, rightfully earning her the nickname “Songbird”. At a very early age, she gave her life to Christ. She became a member of the Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ. She later placed her membership with Sterling Blvd. Church of Christ, formerly 1941 Street Church of Christ. Deborah was involved in several ministries and was a member of several singing groups and bands. She loved working alongside others, especially the youth at Sterling Boulevard Church of Christ. She was loved by many and will be missed immensely by her family, friends, and community. Deborah is survived by her best friend and devoted husband of over 40 years, Johnnie Burns. Sons Johnny III (Fanta) and Londale (Kaliyah); god daughter Autumn (Chris); two granddaughters: Aliyah and Tytianna.
